Subworx Kids BJJ Classes

Subworx head coach Jon O’Marah believes that the current U.K self defence guidance, especially for children, is insufficient, outdated and does not reflect the rapidly changing, increasingly digital world in which we live. With that in mind he has written a comprehensive children’s syllabus with the teaching of practical BJJ at it’s core, however the techniques are also tailored for age appropriate self defence.

Most importantly the classes are FUN and a great workout with lots of movement, running around, games and horseplay! It is a practical session covering simple BJJ techniques like basic submissions, break falls, escapes, grip and hold breaking and fun simple throws. A large part of the syllabus is developing competitive BJJ but we also use those skills to apply to common situations (ie. a headlock, or being grabbed from behind) that a child may encounter that requires them to use BJJ to escape or neutralise unwanted physical contact – without the need for striking. In this class we also briefly touch on stranger danger, digital awareness and social conduct.

As your child progresses they will be graded to match their practical ability, attitude and understanding of BJJ. Children do not need to invest in a gi (uniform) and first belt immediately, a tracksuit is fine to start with for your first couple of sessions.

Our kids classes are suitable for children 5-6 yrs of age and above, they are every Saturday 12pm – 1pm and Tuesdays 4:30pm-5:30pm and are normally taken by Subworx head coach Jon O’Marah.

Kids class duration is 60 minutes and just £7 per child for members or £10 for non members, please read our Mission Statement to hear more about our ethos on academy fees.
