About Subworx Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Welcome to the Subworx website. We are the biggest Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) academy in the historic Roman city of Chester, UK. Subworx are proud members of the UKBJJA who are the official governing body for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the UK, as members we adhere to their strict guidelines and academy criteria.
Subworx head coach is Jon O’Marah, a Roger Gracie Academy black belt with over 14 years experience in both gi and no gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Jon has been teaching adults and children Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for over 12 years. He is a fully insured and enhanced DBS checked instructor and has also completed the CPD Accredited Safeguarding courses and the UK Government ‘Prevent’ course. Jon teaches Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at schools in Cheshire for after school enrichment and through the Virtual School network supporting children who do not learn through the normal school channels.
Importantly, at Subworx we are primarily a gi academy (jacket, trousers and belt) as in our view the gi offers broader learning, more complex technique, greater creativity and is a direct link back to the roots of our sport. We train out of two locations in Chester, our HQ in Saltney and at the ‘Old Chapel’ in Hoole just outside Chester city centre. In both locations we have a professionally matted training area with separate male and female changing rooms and showers, reception and kitchen area with plenty of seating. There is lots of free parking in Saltney on the right as you enter the trading estate, in front of the academy when available and there is lots of on street parking just outside the estate within 30 seconds walk from the academy. At Hoole there is free parking within the grounds of the Old Chapel and there is lots of free on street parking during class times for all students. Subworx membership means you can train across our two locations freely with no extra charge.

We have weekly classes both gi and nogi, these are all mixed age and ability classes suitable for all levels and experience, for the full timetable please see below. We also have a brilliant kids class in Hoole on a Saturday 11pm – 12pm and an after school class on Tuesdays 4:30pm – 5:30pm, please visit the Kids BJJ page for more information.
Class duration is 60 minutes. We offer monthly and also ‘pay as you go’ training but most importantly we have no monthly contracts. Please read our Mission Statement to hear more about our ethos on academy fees and our current pricing structure.
We know how daunting it can be to start something new and meet new people so a positive and welcoming academy atmosphere is hugely important to us. At Subworx we pride ourselves on being open and friendly to everyone who trains with us – this is the best and only way to achieve your goals in BJJ.

*BJJ is practiced in the uniform or ‘gi’ and also ‘no gi’ without the uniform (usually in shorts and a rash guard) – although we are gi academy we would still recommend students learn both forms.
Mission statement and pricing
Since opening Subworx has had one ultimate goal – to deliver top quality weekly classes with academy fees that are accessible to all. We are the first U.K Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy to work directly with the NHS through their Social Prescribing initiative, giving NHS patients access to BJJ as a means of support whilst using NHS services. Through our own experience we know that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, when viewed as a whole, is an incredibly rewarding martial arts journey and life long skill that can enrich anyone’s life, physically and mentally, on and off the mats. We believe that money should never be a barrier to any student starting that journey and enjoying all the great benefits that come with commitment to BJJ training. To make sure our academy is as accessible as possible, Subworx will always offer classes with no contracts and ‘pay as you go’ options as cheaply as possible for as long as possible. It will never be our aim to teach good BJJ for profit, we offer BJJ to anyone who wants to train with us regardless of background and financial status. Lastly, we aim to make resilient and skilled BJJ practitioners that are as good as they can be, within their own means and ability. Whether you are 70 years of age and want to do one session a week, or 20 and want to compete and train full time you are welcome to be part of Subworx.
Academy fees –
FIRST SESSION IS FREE
All sessions at Subworx are £10 PAYG/drop in and if you become part of the Subworx team we also offer an ‘all you can train’ membership which is £60 per month direct debit. You can cancel the direct debit anytime with no contract or minimum notice period. For those under 16 it’s £10 per session to drop in or direct debit £35 per month which is for one session per week and £60 per month for more than one session. For all new students there is a one off £20 sign up fee to join Subworx.
