About Subworx Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Welcome to the Subworx website. We are a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) academy based in the historic Roman city of Chester, UK.
Subworx is an official Mauricio Gomes Legacy affiliate academy, and as such, work to the very highest standard of excellence in all aspects of our BJJ training and coaching. Mauricio Gomes is one of, if not the most, recognisable and important figures in BJJ and brings decades of experience and wisdom to Subworx. We are extremely privileged to have Mauricio as a mentor overseeing our instructors and academy.
Subworx head coach is Jon O’Marah who is a fully insured, enhanced DBS checked, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt with over 12 years experience in both gi and no gi BJJ. To provide the best care for our youngest students Jon has also completed the U.K Government PREVENT awareness course and a CPD accredited Introductory Safeguarding in Education course 2024/25.
Subworx is based at the ‘Old Chapel’ in Hoole just outside Chester city centre. The chapel was fully converted and officially opened in 1998 and has been serving the community as a full time martial arts venue ever since. We have a huge professionally matted area with separate male and female changing rooms and showers, reception and kitchen area with plenty of seating. Within the grounds there is lots of free parking during class times for all students.
(Please note when finding us for the first time the postcode for our academy does not take you to the correct place, please use ‘Housesteads Drive, Hoole’ which will take you to the correct location).
We have weekly classes both gi and nogi. Due to demand our class timetable is expanding but we currently train on a Monday 7-8pm, Wednesday 12-1pm, Friday 6:15-7:15pm and on a Saturday morning 11am – 12pm, these are mixed ability classes suitable for all levels and experience, for the full timetable please see below. We also have a brilliant Kids BJJ class on a Saturday 12-1pm, please visit the Kids BJJ page for more information.
Class duration is 60 minutes and all classes are just £5 per person with no monthly contracts, please read our Mission Statement to hear more about our ethos on academy fees.
We know how daunting it can be to start something new and meet new people so a positive and welcoming academy atmosphere is hugely important to us. At Subworx we pride ourselves on being open and friendly to everyone who trains with us – this is the best and only way to achieve your goals in BJJ.
We do have a Facebook profile but we use Instagram as our main communication portal, please visit our profile by clicking the link at the top or bottom of this page.
If you have any further questions please visit the FAQ’s section of the website or contact us with any queries.

Mission Statement
Since opening in Nov 2023 Subworx has had one ultimate goal – to deliver top quality weekly classes with academy fees that are accessible to all. We are the first U.K Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy to work directly with the NHS through their Social Prescribing initiative, giving NHS patients access to BJJ as a means of support whilst using NHS services. Through our own experience we know that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, when viewed as a whole, is an incredibly rewarding martial arts journey and life long skill that can enrich anyone’s life, physically and mentally, on and off the mats. We believe that money should never be a barrier to any student starting that journey and enjoying all the great benefits that come with commitment to BJJ training. To make sure our academy is as accessible as possible all current Subworx classes will be kept ‘pay as you go’ only, as cheaply as possible for as long as possible. It will never be our aim to teach good BJJ for profit, we offer BJJ to anyone who wants to train with us regardless of background and financial status. Lastly, we aim to make resilient and skilled BJJ practitioners that are as good as they can be, within their own means and ability. Whether you are 70 years of age and want to do one session a week, or 20 and want to compete and train full time you are welcome to be part of Subworx.
If you are interested in training at Subworx feel free to contact us or just drop in any time to start or continue your BJJ journey!
